You are here: Home Midwifery How do I become a Midwife?
Midwives work:
  • in hospitals;
  • in birthing centres;
  • out in the community;
  • in rural areas;
  • in remote areas;
  • with well women; and
  • with at risk women.

How do I become a Midwife?

In Australia there are three ways to become a midwife. You can either:

  • Study a direct entry midwifery degree - the Bachelor of Midwifery (BMID). This is a three year, full-time undergraduate course.
  • Complete a three year undergraduate degree in nursing and then undertake a one year full time postgraduate qualification in midwifery.
  • Or do an undergraduate double degree in midwifery and nursing. This is a four-year full-time course.

The first option of an undergraduate degree in Midwifery is the preferred avenue for education - Studying for a Bachelor degree allows students to spend three years completely focused on midwifery - rather than the post-graduate or double degree which spend only one year focused on midwifery.
